Oura Ring

Oura Ring, the popular wearable health tracker, has introduced a new feature called Symptom Radar. This innovative tool is designed to help users identify early signs of physical strain and take proactive steps towards rest and recovery.

How Does Symptom Radar Work?

Symptom Radar utilizes a complex algorithm to analyze various biometric data collected by the Oura Ring, including:

  • Skin temperature
  • Average temperature trends
  • Respiratory rate
  • Resting heart rate
  • Heart rate variability
  • Inactive time
  • Activity levels
  • Sleep patterns
  • Your age

By monitoring these metrics over time, the algorithm can detect subtle changes that may indicate underlying stress or illness.

Understanding the Strain Levels

Symptom Radar presents strain levels in three categories:

  1. No Signs: Your body appears to be in a balanced state.
  2. Minor Signs: There are subtle indications of stress or strain.
  3. Major Signs: Your body is showing clear signs of significant stress or illness.

When Symptom Radar identifies signs of strain, users can activate Rest Mode. This feature pauses activity tracking goals, allowing the body to prioritize rest and recovery. By focusing on relaxation and sleep, users can boost their immune system and alleviate physical stress.

How to Use Oura Ring’s Symptom Radar

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use Symptom Radar:

  1. Ensure Active Oura Membership: Make sure you have an active Oura membership to access Symptom Radar.
  2. Consistent Wear: Wear your Oura Ring consistently, especially during sleep, to gather accurate data.
  3. Monitor Daily Updates: Check the “Today” screen of the Oura app for any highlighted strain indicators.
  4. Tap for Details: If you see a strain indicator, tap on the Symptom Radar card to view specific details about the detected strain.
  5. Access Symptom Radar Directly:
    • Navigate to the “Today” screen.
    • Tap the menu icon in the top left corner.
    • Select “Symptom Radar” to view detailed insights.
  6. Toggle Symptom Radar: If you wish to temporarily disable Symptom Radar, you can toggle it on or off from the detail screen.

The Evolution of Symptom Radar

Oura Ring’s latest feature, Symptom Radar, is the culmination of years of research and development. This innovative tool, designed to detect early signs of physical strain, was first introduced in April 2024 as part of Oura Labs, the company’s platform for testing new features with a select group of users.

Oura’s Science and Data Science teams have been diligently working to refine the algorithm that powers Symptom Radar. The goal was to create a more responsive, efficient, and accurate tool that could reliably alert users to potential health issues.

When Symptom Radar was first introduced to Oura Labs, members were able to experiment with the feature and share their experiences. This valuable feedback allowed Oura’s Science and Data Science teams to refine the algorithm, making it more responsive, efficient, and accurate.

After months of testing and refinement, Oura officially launched Symptom Radar to all Oura Ring users in December 2024.
