If you’ve been keeping an eye on Apple lately, you know the M5 era has already begun. While the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip quietly landed late last year, the real heavy hitters—the M5 Pro and M5 Max—are just around the corner.
According to the latest reports, Apple is internally targeting the week of March 2, 2026, for a spring launch. This aligns perfectly with the release of macOS 26.3, which already contains hidden identifiers for the new M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.
If you need further proof that something is brewing, look at the inventory. Retail stock of the current M4 Pro and M4 Max models is reportedly dwindling—a classic supply chain signal that Apple is clearing the decks for new inventory.
What to Expect
So, what is actually coming? We are expecting a updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. This update is focused purely on performance. The chassis will remain the same, but the internals will get a significant boost from the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
Performance
- Neural Accelerators: Apple has integrated a “Neural Accelerator” directly into every single GPU core. This means the M5 can handle AI tasks—like image generation or video masking—up to 3.5 times faster than the M4.
- Gaming & Rendering: Graphics performance is expected to jump by 30% to 50%, with the third-generation ray-tracing engine delivering much smoother frame rates in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
- Memory: Unified memory bandwidth is getting a 30% bump to 153GB/s on the base models, while the higher-end Pro and Max versions will likely push past 350GB/s.
More Than “Pro” Models
The March window may not just be for the Pro laptops. Rumors suggest Apple might also introduce:
- M5 MacBook Air: Apple’s most popular laptop is due for its M5 refresh. It will keep the fanless design we love but will finally start with 16GB of RAM as the new standard to support Apple Intelligence.
- The $599 MacBook: There are persistent rumors of a brand-new, low-cost MacBook designed to compete with Chromebooks. It would likely use the A18 Pro chip (from the iPhone 16 Pro) and target the education market.
- Pro Desktops and Displays: The Mac Studio is also due for an upgrade, likely featuring M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations. To accompany it, a new Studio Display is rumored to finally introduce HDR support and a higher refresh rate (90Hz or 120Hz ProMotion), addressing two of the most frequent complaints about the current 60Hz panel.
- iPhone 17e: This entry-level iPhone is expected to feature a 6.1-inch display, the A19 Pro chip, and MagSafe, retaining the design of the previous generation.
