AirPods Max 2

Apple has officially introduced the second generation of its over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. While the design remains largely consistent with the original, the internal technology has received a significant boost. By integrating the H2 chip, it brings several “intelligent” features to the over-ear line, aiming to make the headphones more versatile for both casual listeners and professional creators.

Priced at $549 in the U.S., the AirPods Max 2 will be available to order starting March 25, with standard availability beginning early the following month. The headphones are offered in five color options: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.

Audio and Noise Cancellation Updates

With the integration of the H2 chip and a new high dynamic range amplifier, the AirPods Max 2 aim to provide cleaner audio, accurate instrument localization, and consistent bass response. Apple states that the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now up to 1.5x more effective than the original model. This improvement is specifically aimed at neutralizing persistent low-frequency sounds like airplane engines and train hums.

The Transparency mode has also been refined with new digital signal processing. The result is a more natural-sounding environment when you need to hear the world around you.

Smart Features and Software Integration

The transition to the H2 chip brings several software features to the AirPods Max line for the first time:

  • Adaptive Audio: This mode automatically balances noise cancellation and transparency, adjusting in real-time as you move from a quiet hallway into a loud street.
  • Conversation Awareness: If you start speaking to someone, the headphones automatically lower your media volume and enhance the voices in front of you.
  • Voice Isolation: During calls, the H2 chip works to strip away wind or background chatter so your voice stays clear.
  • Siri Interactions: Users can respond to Siri announcements without speaking by simply nodding yes or shaking their head no.
  • Live Translation: Powered by Apple Intelligence, users can press and hold the listening mode button to translate in-person, spoken conversations into their preferred language.

Tools for Creators and Gamers

Apple has introduced features aimed directly at content creators and musicians. Using the included USB-C cable, the AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio. This wired connection allows musicians to create and mix tracks using Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking on apps like Logic Pro. Additionally, the USB-C connection offers ultra-low latency audio, which is beneficial for both video editing and gaming.

For content creators, the headphones feature a studio-quality audio recording mode to capture natural vocal textures. They also act as a camera remote—users can press the Digital Crown to take a photo or control video recording on connected Apple devices.

Environmental Impact

As part of the Apple 2030 initiative to become entirely carbon neutral, the AirPods Max 2 are constructed using sustainable materials. This includes 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in the magnets, 100 percent recycled polyester for the ear cushions, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin solder in the printed circuit boards. The packaging is fully fiber-based and recyclable.
