Skechers has launched a new line of kids’ sneakers called “Find My Skechers” which come with a secret compartment in the sole designed to hold an Apple AirTag. This allows parents to track their children’s location discreetly.
The shoes are available in various styles and colors for kids as young as 1 and as old as 10. To access the AirTag compartment, you lift the shoe’s insole and a fabric liner, revealing a plastic holder that keeps the AirTag secure without interfering with its signal. Unlike other AirTag accessories, this compartment has a lid that screws into place, making it harder for kids to tamper with or for the AirTag to fall out. This design also makes it safer for very young children who might put things in their mouths.
One important safety feature is that the shoes look like any other Skechers sneaker, with no visible branding to suggest they contain an AirTag. This makes them a very subtle way for parents to keep tabs on their kids.
While some see these shoes as a great tool for peace of mind, especially for “helicopter parents,” others have raised questions. Critical reviewers have led to discussions about whether toddlers really need hidden trackers and if 10-year-olds, many of whom own smartphones and might even receive alerts about being tracked, would figure it out. There’s also research suggesting that digitally tracking children might lead to more rebellious behavior.
However, the shoes could also be useful for locating lost shoes at school or camp. The most obvious benefit is the ability to track a child’s whereabouts. If a child wanders off, gets lost in a crowded place, parents can use the Find My app to locate them. Some commentators have also pointed out that this feature could be helpful for keeping track of elderly family members or Special needs adults who might be prone to wandering or getting disoriented.
